Welcome back stinkers! I hope you’ve had a fantastic start to the new year! Starting off the new year, I’ve got The Big Stinker’s 5 most anticipated 2025 movies. Feel free to leave your most anticipated down below, and the fun thing about this is, once we get to the end of the year, we’ll see how this most anticipated list compares with the top five of the year.
5.) Wicked: For Good
Starting with the #5 spot, we got another Universal feature, Wicked: For Good. Now I, like a lot of people, were extremely surprised by the first. I loved Wicked so much, it made it all the way to the #2 spot from last year, right behind Dune. Wicked was an utterly unforgettable experience in the theater. The film was funny, heartfelt, emotional, it even gave me chills. That Defying Gravity sequence will never be forgotten.
Now I am someone who never saw the original stage show. I’ve just become a fan after Wicked: Part One. So, I have no clue what happens in act two, and I would like to keep it that way. I love the characters, I’ve loved the story, and I love the world that was built around that. It’s those exact things that have got me hooked and excited for part two. There will definitely be a couple rewatches this year while I wait for, Wicked: For Good.
4.) Fantastic Four: First Steps
Moving on to the #4 spot, I have Fantastic Four: First Steps. Now this is a film where all I need for it to be bumped up a spot or two, is a trailer. That being said, I am very excited for this movie! You have the director of WandaVision, one of if not the best Disney+ shows. And the film is in a similar situation compared to DC’s Superman. There have already been three Fantastic Four films, and all of them weren’t even good. And I believe that this will be the movie that breaks the Fantastic Four curse.
Just based off of the footage they put together to show before filming, I loved. I just loved the feel of it, and I think come July, Fantastic Four will give hope to audiences, right along with Superman. Another simple thing that’s got me excited is the members themselves, the castings. Each and every day, I love the cast of the Fantastic Four even more. They have such great chemistry off screen, I can’t wait to see it on screen. That is what I think will carry the film for me. All I need is that trailer, to learn at least a little bit on what that story is about.
3.) Thunderbolts*
Moving on to yet another Marvel movie, in the #3 spot, I have Thunderbolts*. I’ve just loved every piece of marketing and trailer we have gotten from this film so far. I think the trailers look fantastic! The chemistry between the team members looks great, and I just about love all of these characters. Most of these characters. I could care less about Taskmaster. That aside, I just love the overall feel of the film. The thing I’m looking the most forward to is the theme of the film.
The theme is seemingly going to be finding a sense of purpose. Yelena has lost herself in work, Red Guardian doesn’t really feel all that fulfilled. By the way, Yelena and Red Guardian are some of my favorite characters of the MCU. And it really looks like them and the rest of these characters are going to find family in one another. If the director, Jake Schreier delivers, then I will only be more excited for the future of the MCU. Schreier is another reason why I’m excited for this, because he has a fantastic track record. He’s worked on award winning shows like the Bear and Beef, and he directed my favorite episode of Skeleton Crew. Thunderbolts* can’t come any sooner.
2.) Wake Up Dead Man
Moving on to my #2 spot, I have Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Now the Knives Out movies are some of my favorite movies of all time! I thought the first one was absolutely fantastic, and I loved the 2nd one. I cannot wait to see our first trailer for this third installment! This story is going to heavily differ from the first two, just like how the 2nd one differed from the first. Yes, the story is going to be very different, but it’s the tone, the mystery, and the anticipation that carries over. Those first two always had me on the edge of my seat, and even when I rewatch them I am so entertained!
One of the other exciting things is the cast. The cast of the Knives Out movies are absolutely killer! Daneil Craig’s Benoit Blanc of course is a connective thread, which I love! Benoit Blanc is my 2nd favorite fictional detective, behind Batman, and is one of my favorite fictional characters in general. It’s then the rest of the cast. The third one has people like Jeremy Renner, Mila Kunis, Josh Brolin, and so much more! I really hope that Netflix can get their heads straight and give this movie a theatrical release.
1.) Superman
Now I don’t think it’s a surprise. My #1 most anticipated movie of 2025 is Superman. Now there is a lot riding on this film. If Superman doesn’t go well with the general audience, who knows how the DCU will play out? I think Superman is going to have to knock it out of the park in order for the DCU to have a successful launch. This is no doubt the most important film of James Gunn’s career, but why I put it at #1 is because I think that this is going to be the best film of Gunn’s career. He is probably the director that’s the most knowledgeable in comics.
I believe that there hasn’t been a true Superman movie since the original Richard Donner movie. Now don’t get me wrong I love Zach Snyder’s Man of Steel. But you have to admit that Henry Cavil was a true Superman. This trailer was fantastic. This movie has done everything fantastically, let alone the DCU. They’re doing everything right. This trailer was able to explicit such hope. I’ve watched this trailer like 50 times, and I get emotional just about every time. This is a big lived in world and we really see that in this trailer. I think that the world building of the DCU is going to be impeccable. July 2025 can’t come any sooner. Superman is going to bring so much hope to the world.
