Amazon has blown up with recent announcements, talking about Tomb Raider, Spider-Man, Roadhouse, and more. So, without further ado, I present to you my recap of the Amazon Upfront television Presentation.
Amazon’s Road House Sequel
One of the bigger announcements of the presentation was a sequel to the 2024 movie Road House. Road House is a remake of the original movie from 1989. A general audience consensus has shown that the movie isn’t exactly the best but delivered on a fun time. Most people could agree that it was a mistake to release the movie straight to streaming. If the movie was released in theaters ahead of time, then it would’ve been on more people’s radar. It’s kind of up in the air now that the sequel will go to theaters. As of now, no major movie that was sent straight to streaming, has gotten a sequel that got a theatrical release. Maybe Amazon will learn from their mistakes, and release the sequel, with an even better marketing campaign.
Amazon’s First Game Show, The 1% Club
So, before I get into shows with brand new seasons, and new releases. I wanted to mention some game shows heading to Amazon’s way. Amazon’s first trial in game shows starts with, The 1% Club. It’ll be hosted by Patton Oswalt, and the show is an American adaptation of a hit British game show. “It’s a chance to test how your brain works through a series of questions that all have a right answer but can also lead to a series of entertaining wrong answers along the way”. The show will air in October of this year.
Amazon’s Beast Games
Another game show that’ll find its home on Amazon is Beast Games. The show is already breaking records, with the most contestants in a game show, with a $5 million prize. “My goal is to make the greatest show possible and prove YouTubers and creators can succeed on other platforms,” said MrBeast, who will serve as host and executive producer. Jimmy Donaldson will be trying to take his successful show on YouTube and giving it a bigger budget. Jimmy has already been practicing story telling on his channel, and I’m sure he’ll be taking some of that stuff and apply it to his show.
Amazon’s The Boys Season 5
The Boys is about to release its fourth season this year, on June 13. However, the show won’t just in there, for a fifth season has just been greenlit had Amazon. I don’t know much about the show, because I am not of age to view it. However, I can tell you that the show is beloved by fans and has been said to be one of the best shows out there. I have seen some fans worried that this show might be getting stretched too thin or run out of source material to pull from.
Amazon’s Legally Blonde
A new Legally Blonde series is a go at Amazon. We don’t have much information, other than the fact that it’s in development. The series is currently titled Elle. Reese Witherspoon presented this announcement to advertisers at this event. The show follows Elle in her high school days. Throughout the show we’ll see the life experiences that shaped Elle Woods into the layer we know her as today. I personally don’t know much about Legally Blonde. I just know that it has a fanbase and is beloved by fans. This will be a franchise that I’ll have to check out before the show releases.
Amazon’s The Rings of Power Season 2 First Trailer
I cannot give much opinion on this trailer, due to the fact that I have not watched the original season. I’ve already said that I will be going through the original Lord of the Rings films in preparation for the new animated title that is supposed to release this year, and for the recently announced Gollum movie. Now that they’ve released the trailer for season two of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, I might just have to watch the movies this summer. Based off of the trailer alone, it looks like it could be a really good show, that I would enjoy. It seems to have layers of lore and mythology. From what I could tell, this season will feature returning characters from the original movies, and the original season. Keep in mind that the first season had such an inflated budget because most of it went towards obtaining the rights. This season’s budget is very much deflated. The next season releases near the end of the summer, August 29th.
Amazon’s Tomb Raider
Hot off of the success of Fallout, Amazon greenlights a TV adaptation of Tomb Raider. It’s just too bad that we didn’t get many details. Pheobe Waller-Bridge is set to write the show. Talking upon my thoughts, I think this has a chance to be great. The Tomb Raider movies haven’t done the best financially and critically. However, as time went on, video game adaptations have gotten better and better, and they have been more and more successful.
Amazon’s Spider-Man Noir
Probably the biggest piece of news from the presentation, had to be the announcement of a Spider-Man Noir TV show. The show is currently titled, Noir, with Nicholas Cage set to return as Spider-Man. Cage voiced Noir in the animated Into the Spider-Verse, and now he’ll be playing the character in live action. Even people behind the Spider-Verse movies, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal, are set to produce. The series will tell the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.
Now based off of what I’m hearing this sounds like it has the potential to be a great show. Amazon has had some heavy hitters, between The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Fallout, Rings of Power, and more, I have trust in Amazon with this. Now the question is, is this the same Spider-Man from the animated series. I would hope that it’s the same one. I’m sure Sony and Amazon are going to want to go off of the success from the previous films and expand the franchise. It might even benefit the third movie, by giving more depth to the character of Noir. By the time we get to Beyond the Spider-Verse, we would’ve spent extra time with this character.
