Welcome back stinkers! Illumination has recently decided to release a new trailer for Despicable Me 4. The trailer gives an even more detailed look. Today I will be going to breakdown this trailer, and then give you my thoughts on it.

Minions at the AVL?

Despicable Me 4' Trailer - The Minions Develop Super-Powers

It has been a couple years since we’ve had an actual continuation of the Despicable Me story, and the year 2024, we see a new follow up of Gru’s story. However, since Despicable Me has grown as a franchise, and with the Minions prequel popularity, Minions have certainly become even more of a priority. That’s where it kind of starts to take away from the trailer for me. I’ll explain more when I get to my thoughts.

So, what are the minions doing at the Anti Villain League? Well last time we saw them, they were with Gru’s brother Dru. Now Dru isn’t a part of the AVL. Well later in the trailer, AVL head, Silas Ramsbottom, says that you’re probably wondering why you’re here to the minions. He goes on to say that they needed volunteers. Now Dru isn’t exactly the smartest one out of the bunch. So, my guess is that the AVL somehow tricked him into giving them the Minions.

Gru has Been Compromised

Before we get into some of the new stuff. We get a detail about Gru, one of the few we actually got from the trailer. Ramsbottom sees that Gru has been compromised. Based off of the one shot of Gru’s reaction, my guess is that he’s on that sort of spy mission we saw in the last trailer. I think that Gru is sent on this mission, after he’s sent to the safe house. Because we see that girl on this mission with him. That girl, I believe is his neighbor when he moves into the safe house. That’s when the granny wakes up, I think that’s when Ramsbottom sees that Gru has been compromised.

Maxime Le Mal

Despicable Me 4's Villain Revealed: Who Is Maxime Le Mal?

We are then introduced to the main villain of the movie, Maxime Le Mal, voiced by Will Ferrell. We’re also introduced to his side kick, Valentina, voiced by Sofia Vergara. We see his giant bug craft, break out of the ground. My guess is that it could be the underground base from Minions: Rise of Gru, where the Vicious 6 held those interviews. This could be a great way to tie these sequel movies, to the prequels. Fan and content creator, Isaac Carlson, theorized that this villain could be related to Wild Knuckles. If that does end up being the case, then that would make even more sense on where this underground place is. Maybe Wild Knuckles gave it to Maxime, or it might’ve just been part of his inheritance, I don’t know.

Actually, something later in the trailer that might debunk the idea I had, was this shot, where we see him activate the shuttle in the sort of sewer type area. I’m still rooting for my theory though.

The Mega Minions

Ramsbottom talk about how he had to come out of retirement to take down Maxime. I think that only further proves the theory, on who Maxime really is. If Gru and his family is really in danger, and Ramsbottom had to be pulled out of retirement, then Maxime must be a threat. It might just be because he’s related to one of the greatest villains, Wild Knuckles.

Now I found this as a big parody of Marvel. They take Super Soldier Serum and turn into superheroes. You have the Thing, Mr. Fantastic, Cyclops, the Hulk, and I don’t know about the one that flies. Maybe Superman? I cannot wait for these guys to be launched into action. I would only assume that they are integral to the final fight of the movie.

Despicable Me 4: Trailer Thoughts

Now I was kind of mixed on the trailer. I understand that this is a kids movie, and that’s where I think the trailer is the strongest. This seems like a classic Minions adventure, that’ll be great for the younglings. I even thought that the trailer was fun. I’m kind of surprised that they’re still doing brand new things with the Minions. The thing I didn’t like about the trailer though was, that it lacked substance. It didn’t really have a flow to it. This felt more like a teaser trailer, and I was certainly teased! But when you get to the second trailer, then you should be giving out more story details. Now it certainly did reveal more than the original trailer, but I think we could’ve just seen a little extra.
