Welcome back stinkers! I have had my first theatrical experience of 2025 with Dog Man! Today I will be giving you my review and thoughts on the film. Make sure you like and subscribe for more videos like this! And feel free to comment what you thought of the film down below. Let’s get into it!
Dog Man Nostalgia

So, starting off with the good. It was quite a nostalgic film. I grew up on the Dog Man book, and watching this movie made me relive those childhood memories of reading these stories. There was so many things that I forgot about and remembered in this movie. That is one of the reasons why I love this film! I can’t wait to give you my breakdown of the film once it comes to home video!
Faithful Adaptation

If I remember correctly, this movie adapted most of the first three books. And if this movie was so faithful to the books, I hope we can see a sequel. I would love to see a movie where we see Dog Man and Lil’ Petey turn into Superheroes. After watching this, I would also love to see a sequel to Captain Underpants. I don’t think very many people know, but Dog Man is a comic that George and Harold created.
Watching this film really sparked that imagination and charm that Captain Underpants had. That’s why I would place this film right up there with Captain Underpants. By the way, you can check out my review of Captain Underpants now.
New Animation Style
Another thing I thought the movie did quite nicely was the animation. I thought the animation of Captain Underpants was really good and unique, and Dog Man changes that. The animation made it look like it was ripped straight from the books, and it only made it for the better.
Dog Man Charm

One last thing I wanted to mention, before I get into the not so good with this movie is the charm. Just like the Captain Underpants movie, I found it to be very clever. Especially in its humor. In my review for Captain Underpants I talk about how the potty humor is used very well. Well, you aren’t going to find that type of potty humor here, but the comedy was surprisingly good.
I also found the characters and the story to be charming. That’s really the best thing you’re going to get from a movie like Captain Underpants or Dog Man. Dog Man is a very sweet film, with a charismatic story that is great for children. The movie actually has some surprising emotional beats to it. It’s no Wild Robot or anything, but it’s going to be something enjoyable for all ages. At least I would say so. I thought that they did a solid enough job developing these characters.
The Pacing

Now for the not so good. I mentioned that I would place this movie right up with Captain Underpants. While that might be true, I would probably place it in a spot right under that. The only reason is because I didn’t think the movie flowed as nicely as Captain Underpants. They’re about the same runtime, but I don’t think Dog Man was exactly paced the best.
You would get the exposition, and then some rather random scenes that did continue to build to the story, and then you’re launched into the third act. So, while this movie might be a little messy, it was all put together quite nicely.
Won’t be for Everyone

I will also say, like Captain Underpants, it won’t be for everyone. It’s probably because I grew up on the books, but it feels like I’m the only one that is used to Dog Man’s origin. Yes, a dog’s head being sewn on a man’s body sounds crazy. I was just a kid when I was introduced to it, and I’ve just grown up used to the fact that a dog’s head was sewn onto a man’s body. I mean now that I think about it, I guess it does give Batman’s origin a run for his money.
