Welcome back stinkers! Apologies for being late on the Nintendo Direct coverage. I’ve been out of town recently, and I was not able to talk about the direct with you guys. Now, that I’m finally back at my computer, I am here to talk Mario & Luigi, Legend of Zelda, Mario Party, Metroid, and more! Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my breakdown of the Mario & Luigi: Brothership Trailer

Mario & Luigi: Brothership Trailer Thoughts

Now before I get into my analysis of the Mario & Luigi: Brothership Trailer, I wanted to give you some of my thoughts first. This was definitely an amazing opener for the Nintendo Direct. From the looks of it, we might be having a killer year. From the second the trailer started playing, I fell in love with the art style, and the gameplay. Let the Marip RPG streak continue! This game looks creative, and unique, I can’t wait. Nintendo’s got me hyped! The game comes out on November 7, 2024.

Mario & Luigi’s New Voice

Now that I got my quick thoughts out of the way, it’s time to get into my breakdown/analysis of the trailer. We open the trailer with Luigi running away from some bees, and then falling off a cliff. That’s when Mario swoops in and saves him. Of course we start in the Mushroom Kingdom, with Peach’s castle in the back.

Also note that Charles Martinet is not returning. Martinet left as the voice of Mario last year, with his final voice role as Mario’s dad in the Mario movie. Time has passed and the new voice, Kevin Afghani, has voiced Mario in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Wario in WarioWare: Move It. Afghani, of course, is going to be returning as Mario, and this will be his first time as Luigi. I think that he has done a wonderful job and will continue being a great voice for the character. Kevin Afghani is also returning for the new Super Mario Party Jamboree.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership Opener

Mario & Luigi: Brothership | Nintendo Switch games | Games | Nintendo

It has been nine years since we got the last Mario & Luigi installment! AlphaDream was the company behind the development of the original game, but since then they have gone bankrupt. Nintendo didn’t buy them out, so for Mario & Luigi Brothership, Nintendo is behind the development themselves. We then see the brother’s hands glow, with that energy turning into a portal up above. I really wonder how they got that in the first place. Nintendo must be trying to hide something, because the moment Mario grabs Luigi’s hand, it fades to black. The two then get sucked up by the portal, and they find themselves on this electricity-based land. I believe this is going to be the opening sequence of the game.

Game Mechanics

As Mario and Luigi are sucked away, they find themselves stranded on this electricity-based island. We get a look at some of the gameplay, and we learn some of the mechanics that go into it. In classic RPG style, Mario and Luigi work together to fight against some enemies. Where we see Luigi help Mario stomp on some enemies, it looks like it’ll be something where you need to get your timing down. For Mario, you press A to stomp, and then for Luigi you press B to launch Mario. So, it could really be one of two things, or both. The fight is time based, like I just said. Or it’s a co-op ability, and one player is Mario, one is Luigi. If I were to guess, it would be both.

We don’t exactly know if there is going to be a co-op option, but it really seems like there will. We then see other snippets of gameplay, where we see Mario and Luigi work together. Looking at the clip with the see saw, it kind of looks like Luigi is just more of a pawn. You hit the L button to tell him what to do. I hope the case is that you are able to switch back and forth between the main character you play as. Like one point you could be Mario telling Luigi what to do, and vice versa.

Mario & Luigi Meet Connie

Reecee (MARIO & LUIGI IS BACK) on X: "Nintendo got the license to reference third-party characters in multiple Mario spin-offs yet getting the rights to characters from their own franchise that happen

We then meet Connie! Looking at the character design, she’s and outlet, with the holes being the eyes. If you look on top of her head, you can see a plug as well, with the prongs. I wonder if she’s like Toad where you can’t take off the plug and it’s attached to her, or it could just be a hat. When Mario and Luigi meet her for the first time, it looks like it might be at the beginning of the game, after Mario and Luigi gets sucked up by that portal. We also see Connie tell them that they need to figure out a way to get them back home. If it wasn’t clear yet, Mario and Luigi got sent to a strange place, that isn’t familiar. In other words, they’re stranded.

We then see Mario and Luigi look through this telescope attached to this cannon. That’s when they focus on an island, which they then launch themselves towards. My guess is that where Mario & Luigi landed in the first place, is like a hub island/demo area. That’s when they use the cannon to launch themselves to different islands, which would be the equivalent to other worlds, like in other Mario games.

The Extension Corp and Parts Unknown

Mario & Luigi Brothership announced for Nintendo Switch, coming November 7th | Page 3 | Famiboards

As Mario and Luigi make it to this new island, we meet the Extension Corps. Another electricity-based group of people. This is obviously, a play on extension cords. As things kick into action, we see Mario and Luigi fight even more enemies (The Extension Corps included). I have a feeling that these guys are that one group of wannabe villains that pop up frequently, and with each time you fight them, they get harder to beat.

What I love about this second half of the trailer, is that they introduce more and more mechanics. That’s just going to keep the gameplay fresh. We see what looks like a boss fight with a character names, Gorumbla. Mario and Luigi then spin together, to make this UFO, with what’s probably another one of the islands (worlds) being a lava and ice area. I mean what Mario game has not had a fire and ice level. We then get a montage of other fun mechanics, with Mario and Luigi working together. I think the gameplay we get here, further proves that this game is going to be a co-op adventure.

New and Returning Characters

We then get shots of some different characters. We get a shot with Peach with some other outlet style people. It’s looking like that Peach isn’t going to be the damsel in distress. We get a shot of Bowser as well, firing away cannons. I don’t exactly think that Bowser is going to be the main villain. I think that he so happens to find out that Mario and Luigi have found themselves on some island, and he just pays a visit just to be an inconvenience. I think that he will just be a boss fight on the way. I think the shot that we get with this new character, with the red magic and the cloak, is the main villain of the game. Surrounding him is the Extension Corps, looking like they will be doing his bidding.
