Welcome back stinkers! I’m back again with even more D23 news! Just the other day Disney had their entertainment panel that featured Pixar, Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars. You can check out my recaps for those right now. Anyways, Disney then followed up that presentation with a Marvel Animation D23 (2024) panel recap.
X-Men ’97 Season 2
Kicking the Marvel Animation D23 (2024) panel off, we got X-Men ’97 Season 2! We get a confirmation that the X-Men will wear the black and yellow uniforms, from the Grant Morrison’s run of comics. As the sizzle reel continues, we get the confirmation of new characters like Apocalypse, Bishop, Danger, Mariko, Polaris, and Warlock. Now, I’m not all that knowledgeable on these characters. The only one that’s being added to season 2 that I know is Apocalypse. My question is if Apocalypse is going to be the main villain of this season.
It’s weird because X-Men ’97 works a bit differently. They go through these storylines super-fast. That’s ok, it surprisingly works. I mean they went through the whole Dark Pheonix storyline in 20 minutes. Which is funny because they tried to do it in live action TWICE, and it never worked in their favor. So, I wonder if Apocalypse is going to be a one-episode villain, or if he’s going to be the main one.
What If…? Season 3
Next up in the presentation was, What If…? Season 3. During the Marvel Animation D23 (2024) panel, we got confirmation on one episode, and some other smaller things. What If…? Season 3 was confirmed to be the last season, completing the multiversal trilogy. We’re also going to see some more recently introduced characters like Shang Chi, White Vision, Iron Heart, and Moon Knight. Oscar Isaac was the only one of the new characters confirmed to be reprising their role.
In one of the episodes, we’re going to see a new Avengers team, led by Captain America (Sam Wilson). The “twist” is that they will be piloting Gundham like mech suits. This episode will feature the likes of Captain America, Monica Rambeau, Moon Knight, and more. This new Avengers team will be fighting against an army of gamma monsters, and they can apparently assemble together like Voltron.
Eyes of Wakanda
Next up was Eyes of Wakanda! Although we didn’t get much, we still got some nice and interesting details. Todd Harris is the creator of the series, and he developed it alongside Ryan Coogler. Ryan Coogler was the director of the previous two Black Panther films. Eyes of Wakanda is a four-part animated series that will dive into the history of Wakanda and the Black Panther. We also got the confirmation that an Iron Fist will make an appearance in the show as well.
Now I’ve liked what we’ve gotten so far. However, I don’t know how I feel about the four episodes. If it’s going to be that short of a season, they better make up for it in episode length and quality. I’m actually about to talk about another show that is getting the same treatment. Something that’s got me curious is what Brad Winderbaum (Head of Television/Animation) said at the beginning of the panel. He said that all of these upcoming shows are going to have different animation styles. “There will be no inhouse style,” he added. If my memory serves me right, I believe Eyes of Wakanda is going to be a 2d animated show. I can’t wait to see and find out.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
We then move on to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. D23 attendees were shown some exclusive footage of the show. The footage includes Spidey’s first impression of Doctor Strange, numerous costumes, and a Venom-like villain. That is actually what leads to Peter Parker getting his Spidey abilities! Apparently, Doctor Strange and this Venom-like villain are fighting in these portals, and a spider comes out of one of those portals. You can probably guess what happens next. This actually changes the backstory a bit, because Parker’s powers don’t originate from science, but from magic.
Another big change we see is a bit of a What If scenario. In the MCU, Peter’s mentor was Tony Stark (RDJ). However, in this new animated universe, Norman Osbourne is Parker’s mentor figure. His methods are “a little less heroic”. Now for the cast. Hudson Thames is set to reprise his role as Spider-Man. Thames was originally the voice of Spider-Man in What If…? Now for the big surprise, we learn that Colman Domingo is set to lend his voice to the character, Norman Osbourne.
The thing is that attendees were shown a whole wallpaper worth of heroes and villains. We see characters like Daredevil, Doctor Octopus and more. Norman Osbourne might be replacing Stark as Peter’s mentor, but Iron Man isn’t completely gone. Iron Man can be spotted in this cast of characters.
Marvel Zombies
We then end the Marvel Animation D23 (2024) presentation off with a new look at Marvel Zombies. Yes, the trailer was shown in house, but we still got some details. Marvel Zombies is a spinoff series of What If…?, based off of the zombies episode. Well with Marvel Zombies coming out, it’s going to make that episode of What If…? look watered down. Marvel Zombies is another 4-episode series that will be TV-MA.
The trailer that was shown to attendees featured Shang Chi and Katy being attacked by a heard of zombies. Shang Chi’s arm gets infected by the zombies but is then saved by his father Wenwu. Wenwu passes the ten rings to Shang Chi. While saving his arm, Wenwu falls into the heard of zombies. Fast forward 5 years we see Shang Chi and Katy fending off agains a gang of Skrull bike riders in a world overran by zombies.
Marvel Zombies isn’t set to come out for a while, but I have a feeling it might be worth the wait. Of course, it’s way too early to tell, but if Marvel plays their cards right, we can get a more emotional and heartfelt story.
