Welcome back Stinkers! The DC brand is about to head into a rehabilitation process, and one of the first things that is coming is a new Superman. The Superman movie is currently filming, and a majority of the film has already been cast. Well, we just got the announcement of the casting for not only Pa Kent, but Martha Kent too.
Pruitt Taylor Vince as Pa Kent
It was just yesterday when the casting for Clark Kent’s adoptive father was announced, and he will be played by Pruitt Taylor Vince. When I first saw this casting, he had a name that didn’t seem familiar, but a face that I was able to recognize. The casting process so far has seemed like James Gunn is picking talent, over fame. Superman himself is being portrayed by David Corneswet, someone that the regular audience wouldn’t recognize. Pruit Taylor Vince is a guy that seems to have that balance of talent, with a face that people might be able to recognize, but not put a name with.
Where does Pa Kent Come into Play?
So where does Pa Kent come into the movie? As of the last Superman film adaptation, (spoilers) Pa Kent dies in the story. I think James Gunn is going to want to do his own thing, but also take some inspiration. When Zach Snyder killed off Pa in Man of Steel, it didn’t really leave a good taste in my mouth. James Gunn has done an amazing job with conveying emotion in his Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and The Suicide Squad. I trust James Gunn to deliver one of the best Superman stories we have ever seen. Recently on social media, James Gunn showed some inspiration for the upcoming movie. If he is able to put those panels into the movie and adapt them well. Then I think you can make for a good movie, and Pa Kent will only improve it.
Neva Howell as Ma Kent
As of the time of me writing this, Ma Kent has been casted. Neva Howell is set to play Superman’s adoptive mother, Martha Kent. Similar to Vince, Howell is an actress that not a lot of people will recognize. Like I said, James Gunn isn’t going to cast the character because of someone’s fame, but because of someone’s talent. Fat Andy from Parks and Rec is able to be both Super Mario and Garfield, because James Gunn took a chance on him, and he delivered the performance of a lifetime with Star Lord. So, you just have to trust the casting process James Gunn goes through for his movie. I can’t really talk about my thoughts on her acting chops before, because the only thing that I’ve really ever seen her in is in Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Where does Ma Kent Come into Play?
In almost every adaptation of the classic Superhero, Martha Kent has had a prominent role in them. I think in SUPERMAN (2025), she will step down a role a little bit. I think when leaning into that emotional side like I talked about with Pa, she can be the part in Clark’s life that lifts him off the ground and is Clark’s base support throughout his early Superman career. Some people have speculated for Maya Alcock’s Supergirl to show up in here as well. If Supergirl does end up having a cameo role in here, then I think Martha Kent could be the person to put it together. Clark Kent and Lois Lane are going to be in some of their earlier stages of dating, and they could be at a time where Lois meets Clark’s family. Martha could then be the one to set up a family dinner, and invite Clark’s cousin, Kara Zor-El to the party.
