Welcome ladies and stinkers! This is The Big Stinker where I talk about things movies, TV, gaming, and more. Today we’ll be talking about Star Wars with Skeleton Crew. Episode 1 is titled “This Could be a Real Adventure” and is directed by showrunner Jon Watts.
Can the Writing of Skeleton Crew Episode 1 Carry On?
Now is this a great episode? Yes, I thought it was great! I don’t think that’s the question that we should be asking though. Is each episode going to be able to keep up that momentum? Looking at the directors list, I really think it can. It had pretty much an amazing start. So, it really just dwindles down to the writing. Now I haven’t checked the writers list yet, but if they’re able to keep up with this level of writing, we’re going to be in for a treat.
An Expansion of the Star Wars Universe
Now I just found this episode in particular to be very charming. The next one might even be better, but we’re only here to talk about this one. I’m surprised, but not surprised how they were able to pull this off. Star Wars is a franchise that me and a lot of people have been wanting to be expanded upon. I want Star Wars to try new things, and move out of that same era they like to work in. Now this series won’t particularly do that, but it’s still something that we’ve never seen in Star Wars. Instead of being different by taking it up, they take it down. They take down all the way to the suburbs. Who knew, the suburbs could be awesome in a science fiction show?
This show also creates a bit of a sense of familiarity. I’ve seen movies and shows that are quite similar to this one. I’ve seen these types of characters before. However, the writing and the direction is able to make it more unique and it’s own thing. By doing that they were able to pull off such great charm. I found the characters to overall be real charming. Especially Neel! I will die for Neel! So, this episode is overall a great start to the show. We’ll just have to see if Disney can carry it through until the finale.
Pirates
There’s a new rendition of the Star Wars theme! The screen then reads, Since the fall of the EMPIRE, the NEW REPUBLIC has maintained order. And yet, remote hyperspace routes are increasingly plagued by piracy. These PIRATES boldly brand their armored hulls as a sign to all ships. SURRENDER… or die. We start the episode off with a pirate invasion. It’s actually the same crew that we see in Mandalorian Season 3. We learn that they have a new captain now. Vane even returns, played by Marti Matulis. I believe that’s Jude Law who’s the captain. If so, he’s just gonna be yet another Jedi con artist, but maybe this show could make it work. We see Jude Law pose as a Jedi in episode 2.
Wim and Neel
We then meet Wim, played by Ravi Cabot-Coyners, he’s the voice of Antonio from Encanto. We see that he’s playing with some Star Wars action figures. Wim uses Blue Milk. We also meet Wim’s dad, played by Tunde Adebimpe. Star Wars suburbs. We then meet Wim’s best friend, Neel! I will just die for Neal. Neel is played by Robert Timothy Smith, who was actually just in Jack Black’s new Dear Santa movie. I also just love how much Neel parallels Liam from that movie, which I’ll come back to in a sec. Now you would initially think that Neel is the same race as Max Rebo from the Cantina Band, but apparently Neel is a different blue elephant race. There’s also a kid on the bus who’s an Ithorian, the same race as Mrs. Ick from a moment ago.
Class in Session
Class is in session, and they’re learning about different Star Wars currencies. Remember when I mentioned the recent holiday movie, Dear Santa? Well, it really just looks like Robert Timothy Smith is playing the same character in both of these. Now the desks are modeled what seems like Etch and Sketches. Wim draws a Jedi with one. Credits are seemingly going to play as a vocal point throughout the series. We then meet Undersecretary Fara, played by Kerry Kondon. Tomorrow, we learn about a Career Assessment test.
Fern and KB
We then meet our two other leads, Fern and KB, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Kyriana Kratter. Just a couple of speed bikers. Thanks to WIm and Fern’s first encounter, we learn that this planet prohibits bikes. The planet all together is actually pretty strange. Yeah, I’ll get into that in a second. I just wanted to point out this detail that I found funny, when Fern is able to get Wim to double guess himself on what they might just do to him.
A Real Goonies Adventure
The four of them find each other at this ship site, which Wim originally got in trouble in. Now this is where I wanted to mention the droids. Is it me or is it just totally weird how overrun this planet is with droids. They’re driving kids to school, and act as pretty much the police now. We learn more about the mystery of this planet in the next episode, but maybe these droids might have something to do with it. The kids then go inside to explore this abandoned ship. They find abandoned droids, skeletons, and have a real Goonies adventure. That is when things kick into action, and the star ship reawakens. The ship makes it past the barrier and into hyperspace. I just love how smooth of a transition they have going into the credits. They practically end the episode, where we first started off. What a way to end the episode.
