Welcome back ladies and stinkers! I am back with yet another movie review, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. This is a part of a miniseries, where I review and breakdown each of Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog projects.
A Bigger Film in Scope
Now what I immediately wanted to make clear was that this is a step up from the first film. I thought that the action was better, the characters are more developed, and the scope is overall greater. That overall made the film more rewatchable for me. The adventure was bigger, which I thought was great, but watching the movie also kind of made me miss the first one. It was a simple road trip movie, with the two characters needing to get from point A to point B. This movie then brings that up a notch and adds more characters and more storylines.
Sonic and Tom
Thanks to the previously established relationship between Tom and Sonic in the first film, they’re able to further progress these characters. It turns from a friendship, to more of a father-son relationship. That was simply just a heartwarming addition to the film. During the wedding sequence, Tom was telling Maddie that he wishes Sonic can have his own group of pals. That was a very sweet aspect of the film, and it pays off pretty well by the end.
Team Sonic
Speaking of those characters, I thought they were great additions to the cast! I mentioned in my Sonic 1 videos that they are able to get these castings down to a tea! Ben Scwartz as Sonic is iconic, Jim Carrey as Robotnik is my favorite role he’s done. Now we have the inclusion of Knuckles and Tails, and they are both awesome. Idris Elba as Knuckles is great, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails is right from the games.
Going back to Tom wishing for Sonic to find a group of pals, by the end he gets what he wants. I just love the dynamic between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckle. It’s a generic sort of team, but it works really well. Sonic of course is the charismatic leader, Tails is more of the sidekick and tech head, and Knuckles is the strong one, where everything goes over his head. Knuckles is really a character that you can compare to Drax. Circling back to that team dynamic, it puts all the characters at ease. Specifically, to our pillars, Sonic and Tom. Tom’s son was able to find best friends for life, and Sonic finds friends that will be there for him and that he can go to in a time of need. That further benefits future films, possibly when Sonic puts up that final fight against Shadow.
Tails
One of the new additions of the cast of characters in this film is Tails. Now I love all the characters that are in this, but I found there to be something special with Tails. In particular, I just loved what Tails represented. Out of the whole cast, he is the only one that has a professional voice actor. It’s also how the character is utilised throughout the film that makes me think of him the most like his video game counterpart.
Knuckles
There’s another new addition to the cast, and that is Knuckles. What I’ve always wanted to make clear in my Sonic videos, is the fact that they know how to nail castings! I think Idris Elba as Knuckles is just iconic. He’s practically made the character at this point! Now Knuckles is a bit of a generic character. It’s a character that most people have seen many times across media. It’s how they grow the character out though. That’s what makes me think what they do with the character is great and is what can differentiate the character from everything else. It’s also fun seeing Knuckles grow as a character. It’s fun to watch all of the characters grow throughout the series!
Dr. Robotnik Evolved
Now, it’s time to talk about the man, the myth, the legend. Jim Carrey of course returns as Dr. Robotnik, and he is returning to play double Robotniks in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The reason why I love this version of the character so much, is what I’m pretty sure is the same thing for Carrey himself. Each movie shows Robotnik in a different light. In my last review, I would talk about the character arc that Robotnik is set on. Simply going from Robotnik to Eggman. As that character arc progresses, it of course gets better and better. That’s why I’m even more excited for Sonic 3, because we are about to get a fully unleashed Eggman.
The Wedding and Dance Battle
Now I got to address the elephant sized Hawaiian wedding and dance sequence in the room. Was it necessary to the story? The dancing no, but I could see an argument for the wedding. That out of the way, I found the two to be quite fun. The reason why I wanted to address this is because it’s not going to be for everybody. It might take one out of the experience of the film, and that’s ok. I expected to have a fun time with this movie, and I was served quite the fun time. I actually think it’s more rewatchable than the first because of it.
Randall Plot Twist
That’s where I would like to talk about the plot twist of the film. G.U.N. invades the wedding, and it is revealed that Rachel’s fiancé, Randall, is a G.U.N. agent. Now, again, this whole wedding sequence isn’t going to be for everyone. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have fun with it. Rachel was certainly one of the many highlights of the film. I found her character to be really funny. I still have to preface that, cause not everyone is going to enjoy this movie’s sense of humor. This franchise is still certainly targeted for a younger audience.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Post Credit Scene
Now, I just wanted to speak on the post credit scene of the film. It’ll probably be something I get into more in my breakdown of the film. G.U.N. discovers that Shadow the Hedgehog has been hidden all these years. Now when reviewing something that has come out a couple of years ago. For things like these, you’ve really got to shift your mind to around that time. That being said, it is a great post credit scene. Especially seeing the trailers for Sonic movie 3, it’s still just as exciting. Thanks to the early Sonic 3 reviews, we’ve learned that it is going to have two big post credit scenes. And so far, I think these Sonic movies have put out some great post credit scenes.
