Welcome back, ladies and Stinkers. This holiday season, I will be reviewing and breaking down each of the recent Sonic the Hedgehog entries that includes Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog, two knuckles, and then just in time for Sonic the Hedgehog three. Let’s get into it.
Sonic the Hedgehog and Tom
Now what I wanted to start with is our two main leads, Sonic, played by Ben Schwartz and Dom Donut Lord played by James Marsden. They put on great performances. The team behind the Sonic Movies or this franchise at this point does a really good job with its casting. Like from this movie and on. And I think they’re just going to keep doing great things. But Sonic and Donut Lord and the pillars that start this franchise. Those two are really just connected to the movie. It makes it more grounded. This whole road trip movie is not big in scope compared to the second one. Definitely the third one. This is just grounded. It’s a road trip movie between Sonic and Tom.
Sonic’s been wanting friends for a real long time now, and he’s felt like an outcast, which I’ll get more into in a second. And he finds this family, Tom and Matty. And he just kind of creates this construct. Oh, I have great friends. This whole town or his friends, this is his home. And he’s made it this home. And it’s not like it’s a bad thing. Like you would initially think it is. It’s a sweet thing.
Sonic the Hedgehog and Hop
This movie is overall just sweet. And then when Tom finds him in the shed. You would expect, like those two wouldn’t necessarily go together. Like you he would initially dump them on the street. It reminds me of the movie hop. But if it was good. Now, don’t get me wrong. I grew up with hop. I enjoyed it growing up. I know it’s not that good, but it’s. You could see the parallels, you know? James Marsden finds this. Out of this world. creature, and they grow a bond together. But Sonic is just able to go further with that and they build the father son relationship that we see more than two. You always have to have a start. And this is just a great start for those two.
Good Movie, but Good Adaptation?
Now what I just want to make clear, if you didn’t get what I’ve rambled on about. I just want to make clear it’s really charming. Now, it doesn’t do anything in particular to stand out. As I’ll get more into this later. But one of my gripes is that it’s less of a video game adaptation and more of its own thing. But that own thing is great again, charming, sweet, love the characters and it’s just a great start to a franchise.
Dr. Robotnik
Now I just have to talk about probably the biggest person out of this movie, it’s Sonic. It’s Dr. Robotnik. This is probably my favorite role Jim Carrey has taken on and I have a feeling it’s one of his favorite roles, too. I mean, he’s just wacky and goofy. And that’s what Jim Carrey is all about. And this first iteration of Dr. Robotnik. You’d originally be taken aback or struck in back at first. I well. That’s not a bag, man. I know. But when you take a step back, you can realize. It’s the start of an evolution of the character, its character arc simply.
You see him evolve into who we know as Eggman? You know, you have that sleek look with the mustache and hair in the first one, and then in the second one, he is a little bit more like him, you know, crazy mustache, bold. Crazier. And then, from what it looks like in the third one, he’s full Eggman. You know, he’s fat, and he has the game accurate suit with Gerald there. It’s just more Eggman. Double than Eggman. Double the villain double the fun.
A Grounded Film
So, recapping my thoughts, it’s a fun movie. It’s charming with great characters. Great casting all around. Especially, you know, Sonic and Eggman. And then the future holds a lot more What I think I like best about this movie is that it’s a contained film. It’s just a simple road trip movie. And we see a great bonding between Sonic and Tom. So, what this movie sets up really benefits the future films. You know, do grounded before you get bigger in scope. And that’s what this franchise does. It just gets bigger and bigger.
Sonic and Eggman
Again. Jim Carrey is his main stand out and it’s the start of an evolution. Again, character. So, it makes me think that they had a vision for his character this whole time. And it’s a great, great arc. From weird to crazy. And then what I forgot to mention earlier is probably one of the biggest parts of the movie that I took away from. Is that sonic and Robotnik or parallels from each other? You know, they both have that outcast sort of feeling, you know? I don’t think Robotnik realizes it, but he’s the last option that people want to see. And he talks about how he was bullied in school.
But Sonic, on the other hand, he just hasn’t had a chance to find that family. And when he finally does, he is able to accept who he is, and he finds loved ones all around him. But Robotnik just turns crazier, and he takes that into evil. And that’s what I like to see that that differentiates the two.
