Welcome back stinkers! Paramount has recently released the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 teaser, and I am so excited! Today I will be giving you my thoughts and an analysis of my own. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 releases this Christmas season on December 20. We have the returning cast, Ben Schwartz (Sonic), Idris Elba (Knuckles), Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails), Jim Carrey (Dr. Eggman), James Marsden (Tom), and the new addition of Keanu Reeves (Shadow).
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Teaser Thoughts
Just like I said, I thought this was an awesome trailer. The best thing about the first two movies was how charming they were. I found all the characters to be absolutely charming, and the second one might even be better because they added even more charming characters. In my opinion, I really think the trailer recaptured a bit of the charm of the first two. I know it’s too early to tell, but I think that this third one could have the charm of the first two and even more. Just based on different shots and scenes from the trailer, it looks like it could carry some emotion with it. You don’t only have Shadow and his backstory, but the other characters as well. There’s that one shot with James Marsden, and I also think there could be something between Eggman and Gerald.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Teaser Analysis
Flames of Disaster
I first wanted to start off with, the Flames of Disaster! If you weren’t aware, Knuckles recently got his own spin-off series earlier this year. It was a really quick watch, so to prepare for Sonic 3, I would recommend checking it out. You can see my review HERE. So, seeing this shot, makes me think that they might be carrying over some things from the show to the movie. It’s obviously not going to be to the point where the Knuckles show becomes homework. I think it is only going to strengthen the universe, for the creators want to build out the Sonic cinematic universe, and Knuckles using the Flames of Disaster is a great start.
Project Shadow
Now, we just have to get the big thing out of the way. Shadow the Hedgehog!!! I’m going to say what everyone else is saying, Shadow looks amazing. He is going to be the best villain in the Sonic franchise yet. He is going to be a character with depth and emotion. This character is the reason why we could possibly be looking at the best Sonic movie yet. Speaking about the story itself, Shadow breaks out of this prison. We get a shot of the outside of the prison earlier in the teaser, and it is more than likely going to be Prison Island. Prison Island was one of the many locations/levels in the Sonic games. We see this awesome breakout sequence, the head of G.U.N. approaches Sonic along with his friends to fight against Shadow.
Shadow’s Backstory
We then get different shots and teases for Shadow’s backstory. It’s really something that most Sonic fans know, but not really the general audience. That’s actually one of the biggest complaints about the trailer. Lots of people are saying that the trailer showed a little bit too much. They showed this great shot, but also Shadow and Gerald in a pile of rubble, with what looks to be the dead body of Maria. Now Shadow has a rather tragic backstory. Gerald Robotnik (Eggman’s Grandfather) created Shadow to help his granddaughter (Maria Robotnik) with this unique sickness. Shadow and Maria grow very closely together, but then a G.U.N. agent kills Maria, and it drives Shadow in a fit of rage. He absolutely loses it!
Time for speculation! A very popular theory that’s been going around is that Tom (James Marsden) has a family history that just so happens to run through G.U.N. So, maybe a distant relative of his, worked at G.U.N. and just so happened to be the one to shoot Maria. Shadow then goes mad, but someone like Gerald Robotnik is able to put a stop to him and freezes Shadow. That’s when we cut to the present day, and Shadow is somehow able to escape the prison. I just mentioned Tom and that’s going to be important in a moment.
Team Sonic
So, once Shadow gets out, G.U.N calls on Team Sonic, which features the likes of Tails, Knuckles, and of course Sonic. Well they fight Shadow all the way in Tokyo, but it doesn’t really go well. Shadow demolishes the three of them, which leads into Sonic teaming up with Eggman. I’ll talk about Eggman in a second. I do have a bit of a theory. Lots of people are thinking that there is going to be a surprise character in the film, one way or another.I think they can introduce one of these characters through G.U.N. They might vouch for another character to join Team Sonic, and who wouldn’t be better than Amy. I think they could introduce her in a post credit scene of sorts.
Tom in Trouble
Now this shot is one of the many elephants in the room. There’s this one shot of James Marsden seemingly in trouble as he screams for Sonic. Now here’s what you should note. Tom is currently in a G.U.N. uniform, and that Tom’s family has a lot of history in Green Hills. Now I think (like many people) that it could be one of two options. Maybe Donut Lord got a promotion and is actually working for G.U.N. Or that he could be wearing the uniform to infiltrate the facility. I’ve been bouncing a lot between those two outcomes. I think they fit into the story very well.
There’s been a lot of theories, saying that Shadow could kill Tom, because he’s an ancestor of the G.U.N. agent that killed Maria. Do I think they could do that? Yes. I can definitely see that happening. I can also see them not doing that. This could just simply be Tom trying to infiltrate Prison Island, and a bunch of guards catch him and pin him to the floor. Tom then yells at Sonic to tell him that they’ve been caught. I can really see them going both ways. I’m just not going to be ready if they kill off James Marsden.
Eggman and Team Sonic
Things then kick off into even more action with the team up of the century. As a last resort to beat Shadow, Team Sonic approaches Robotnik (now Eggman) for help. Ya’ll Jim Carrey is going to steal the show once again. It’s even better that he’s fat Eggman now. I will say, I’m not a big of Eggman’s suit. I wish that this one could’ve been a bit more accurate to the games, instead of just taking the one from the second movie, sewn with Stone’s shirt. One thing that you should remember is that Eggman agreed to help out, as long as he could have one of Sonic’s quills used to energize Robotnik’s machines. I think that could lead into a surprise near the end, which I will talk about momentarily.
Gerald Robotnik!
We then end the trailer off with Gerald Robotnik. I already mentioned Gerald earlier when talking about Shadow and Maria. Gerald is the grandfather of Maria and Dr. Robotnik, as well as the creator of Shadow the Hedgehog. If you couldn’t tell, Jim Carrey is the one playing Gerald! Yes, you heard me. Two Jim Carreys are better than one anyways. Now for what most fans are asking, what is he doing here? Folks, I don’t think this movie is going to feature the likes of time travel. I mean don’t quote me on that, it obviously could. I just think we are making the mistake that all fans make, and we’re simply overthinking it. Don’t get me wrong, I was overthinking it at first too. I just think that whenever Maria dies, that’s just a much younger Gerald, and this old one is current day.
Now I realize that Eggman says that’s impossible. That is in favor of time travel or whatever, but it could’ve just simply been that Gerald’s been lost for many years. I think that Eggman will just so happen to find him, and Gerald will just come out of hiding when he hears that Shadow is on the loose.
The Ending Surprise
Now at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, we got a bit of a surprise with Super Sonic. And in the movie prior, we got Tails. I think we can see another surprise in this third title. I think we can get a surprise near the big end fight, and a post credit scene. I already mentioned Amy, which I think will be teased in a post credit scene. It’s the big end fight that I’m talking about here. I think that quill that Sonic gave Robotnik at the beginning will pay off for this big end fight with Shadow, and Robotnik (or Robotniks) will use the quill to create the one and only Metal Sonic. That is definitely a way to get fans excited.
