Welcome back stinkers! Summer Game Fest (2024) was just the other day, and I am here to cover some details from the recent presentation, and give you some of my thoughts. I will not cover everything from the presentation, just some of my highlights from the show.
Batman: Arkham Shadow
So, one of the trailers we got was for Batman: Arkham Shadow. It’s another installment in the Arkham franchise, this time it’s a VR experience for the Meta Quest 3. I do have to say, those cinematics look amazing, it took my breath away. I’m just curious on what the game play looks like. The story features a villain by the name of Rat King, and Batman is trying to save Gotham from the infestation of rats. That’s at least what I took away from the trailer.
At this point I don’t care whether or not this has a good story, I just hope that the game play is fun. Take the Iron Man game. When I played it, I had an absolute blast. I mean who doesn’t want to fly around and shoot lasers as Iron Man. Iron Man is game that has kind of a messy story to me. So, if Arkham Shadow is able to capture that magic of being Batman. Then I think it’ll make a great VR game. I think it’ll need more flying around and throwing batarangs, then detective work. I think you would need some of that action for a VR game. Don’t get me wrong, the detective work in the other games was amazing and awesome.
Lego Horizon Adventures
One of the games that I was surprised with was, Lego Horizon Adventures. I personally don’t understand the point, but I’m sure it could be a fun title. It’s an overhead Lego RPG, another installment in the Horizon World. It’s literally a mix of the Horizon games, and almost any Lego game. The Lego side almost takes away from the Horizon feel. I also thought that it would’ve been a PlayStation exclusive like the other Horizon games, but no, you can find it on the PS5, Switch, Steam, and Epic Games. My only problem is that it looks like a fun Lego time, but not a Horizon time. It kind of felt like a generic Lego game to me, which I don’t have a problem with.
Among Us Series
Now I only have a few thoughts on the new Among Us show. I think it looks fun enough. However, I do think this show is a couple years too late. I love the fact that they gave some of these characters personality. I think that this show has too much of a stacked cast then it should. The cast features Patton Oswalt (White), Dan Stevens (Blue), Elijah Wood (Green), Liv Hewson (Black), Randall Park (Red), Ashley Johnson (Purple), Debra Wilson (Yellow), Kimiko Glenn (Cyan), Phil Lamarr (Brown), Wayne Knight (Lime), and Yvette Nicole Brown (Orange). This overall feels like a fun time, similar to the cartoon shows I’ve grown up with. The show is a literal copy of the game. Following a crew of astronauts, in a murder mystery.
Sonic X Shadow Generations
Now I’m not the biggest Sonic fan, but I’ll play a game every now and then. Summer Game Fest premiered the first look trailer for the remake of Sonic X Shadow Generations. Now the reason why I find this interesting (not surprising) is because this year is when the third Sonic movie is supposed to come out. Sonic X Shadow Generations is supposedly what Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is going to take inspiration from. So, I’m honestly not surprised that Sega wanted to try to correlate a release with the movie. The weird thing is that this is the first time they’re doing this. They didn’t do it for Knuckles, or the first two movies. Sega might just want to cash in, and this is looking to be the biggest Sonic title yet. Which is also planned to lead into other projects. The point has been made that they are not interested in stopping. If this Sonic universe is done right, I think Sega and Paramount have something cooking.
Getting back on track with the game itself, I actually think it looks like a fun game. Generations seems to be beloved by fans, and I might just have to pick it up to prepare for the Sonic movie. The game follows two different Sonics, as well as Shadow the Hedgehog. What might be the best part of the Sonic games are the levels. At least in my opinion. These levels look like they could be a blast. It does even look like they go more into story, which I love. The backstory Shadow has is truly heartfelt, and bittersweet.
Star Wars Outlaws
Star Wars Outlaws is certainly a game that has my attention. Although much wasn’t featured at Summer Game Fest, it still did its job, and got me more excited for what’s to come. It’s an open world Star Wars game, where you play as a bounty hunter, doing jobs across the galaxy. The game play looks breath taking, and the world building looks immaculate. Just think GTA, but in Star Wars. It’s almost a dream come true. Again, not a lot was shown, but game play is planned to be shown at this Ubisoft event. Star Wars Outlaws releases August 30, 2024.
Dune Awakening
Now this might be my number one take away from this presentation. From a cinematic point of view, it looks really cool! The game takes place in an alternate reality where Paul Atreides was never born. The Atreides were never wiped out, and it was the only vision where it ended in happiness. Paul’s mother obeyed her Bene Gesserit orders, and gave birth to a girl. Instead of the Atreides dying, the Fremen gets wiped out. They never found their Lisan al Gaib, or Muad’Dib. Just from the cinematic shots alone look insane!
Now this wasn’t shown at Summer Game Fest (2024), but I wanted to mention the game play. The game is an open world survival MMO. Honestly my best example would have to be No Man’s Sky. You play a character that is destined to be a leading man, and you have to learn how to survive and adapt to Arrakis. I think based off of this new trailer, they have the story side down. As of now, I think the game play has potential. If it is done right, it could make for a great game. If you’re looking for more information, stay tuned for June 20. The game is set to release on the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
