Welcome back stinkers! During D23 in Brazil we didn’t only get a new trailer for Captain America: Brave New World. We also got a brand-new Thunderbolts* Special Look! Today I will be giving you my thoughts and analysis on some of the new looks that we get.
Thunderbolts* Special Look Thoughts
After watching this, it is safe to say that this is my most anticipated Marvel project next year, and one of my most anticipated of the year in general. I absolutely loved this brand-new look! I love these characters, and I love the chemistry that they have with each other. David Harbour put it well, saying that you have your individual power, but once you find the right people, it can be stronger when you’re together. I think that this movie isn’t only going to deliver some great action, and even great humor, but I think this is going to carry a great plot and theme.
I absolutely can’t wait for this movie! After the crazy success of Deadpool & Wolverine, and more recently The Penguin, I think comic book fans are eating GOOD! I think just as movie fans we are going to have an amazing year next year.
Thunderbolts* Special Look Analysis
Full Scene Revealed
We open out Thunderbolts* Special Look with a scene right out of the movie, and I absolutely loved it! I just love every line of dialogue written for David Harbour. The Red Guardian is honestly one of my favorite MCU characters. However, we are talking about Bucky! He rides on to the scene, Terminator style, helping the team out. At least we thought. It looks like that Bucky might actually be back under the Winter Soldier “spell”.
Now before I move on to the rest of the trailer, I wanted to speculate for a second. So, where does this scene take place in the movie? I believe that the base that Yelena, Ghost, Taskmaster, and U.S. Agent are sent to infiltrate, is located in this desert. I think the crew flees the scene, and Red Guardian is their escape car driver. That’s when Bucky catches up to them. It’s either that he is under that Winter Soldier trance, or that he’s late to the part. Meaning that he was also sent to retrieve whatever at the base, but he is just chasing down whatever he needs.
Careful Who You Assemble (Who Bought Avengers Tower Revealed!)
We then see the team enter the top of what is presumably Avengers Tower. I mean Valentina practically just flat out stated it! I think that this is of course after the desert scene, and they’ve realized what Val’s plan originally was. They of course come in not so happy. That’s where the, “eat shit Valentina” comes from. Now, I’ve got to address the elephant in the room. Where is Taskmaster?” We do see her with this rest of the group on the main floor, but I think it might just be great editing. I’m thinking what a lot of others are thinking. I think that Taskmaster might bight the dust in this movie. I mean we’ve barely seen her in the trailers. Like at all.
Yelena
On to the individual members! We see Yelena complete one of many of her mission. We learn in a previous trailer, that she has lost herself to her “work”. That’s when we see her first approach her dad (Red Guardian). In fact, I think this might be what the film could open with. Or the film opens with Yelena visiting her dad, and we see this mission playout, as she talks with her dad.
Yelena was originally introduced in Black Widow (2021), as Natasha Romanoff’s sister. They are both trained Black Widows, which we learn more about in that Black Widow film. I believe that the Black Widow movie ends off with Valentina approaching Yelena about getting rid of Hawkeye. That where we see Yelena again, in the Hawkeye series.
Bucky
We then move on to Bucky! Cleaning his arm in a dishwasher. So, the last time we saw the Winter Soldier, was in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Throughout the series we’ve seen Bucky deal with some of his past trauma. In fact, I believe we’ll see more of that here. In a previous Thunderbolts* trailer, we learn that Bucky has now become a congressman. I think that Bucky might have taken that job for a while now, and that’s where we get into the film.
The theme of the movie is seemingly going to be about finding a purpose. Yelena getting lost in her work, John Walker dealing with his past, etc. I think Bucky is going to take on whatever Val asks him for, and throughout the movie, I think we’re going to see Bucky return to form. Just not when he’s the Winter Soldier under the trance, more like the Bucky we see in Avengers Infinity War.
Red Guardian
We then see the Red Guardian, in his open. I mentioned how I thought this is going to set place in the beginning of the film. I think since after the events of the Black Widow film, we will see him face similar struggles to everyone else on the team. Finding a sense of purpose. I think that he might just be tagging along with Yelena, trying to help his daughter out. If you don’t know, Red Guardian was the Soviet Union’s attempt at the Super Soldier program. He was sent to the U.S. to a Hydra occupied institute, within S.H.E.I.L.D. In order to do so, him and his partner posed as in American family, with to surrogate daughters, Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova.
John Walker
Now for another favorite of my, dime store Captain America! John Walker was introduced in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In there he was selected by the government to become the new Captain America. That didn’t work out so great, with him publicly murdering someone with the shield. We then end his character off with Val approaching him to do work for her, now become U.S. Agent. Just like everyone else, John Walker is having struggles, finding a sense of purpose. In the previous trailer, we see him reading articles and negative press about himself.
Ghost
We then finally see Ghost for the first time since 2018. Ghost was originally introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp, and she looks a lot different now. Ava Starr fell under a quantum accident, along with it killing her parents. Due to this quantum accident, she gained the ability to render herself intangible and able to generate extreme amounts of power. After Bill Foster takes her in as his own, and thanks to his care, she learns that she is dying to the lack of quantum energy.
Now this is going to be an unpopular opinion. I think Ghost might bite the dust. Now compared to Taskmaster, we see her in a lot of scenes with the rest of the team. I however think that we might see Ghost’s story come to a close. Compared to the other characters, except Taskmaster I have yet to be able to tell you where Ghost’s character is. A lot of people are expecting Taskmaster to bite the dust, but I think Ghost could be death that surprises the audience, maybe even making them shed a tear.
Taskmaster
Now, we’ve got to address the elephant in the room. Where is Taskmaster? We only really see her interact with the group near the beginning where the other members are first sent. It’s the team’s first encounter. We then never really see her come back again. That is making me think that Taskmaster isn’t going to make it out of this mission alive. It also doesn’t help that we see a shot of that same room blowing up.
Now Taskmaster was first introduced in the film, Black Widow. Now she was brutally injured, due to an assassination attempt on her father. That’s where her mind and body get controlled by a chip, which imbued her with reflexes that allows her to mimic the fighting techniques of other individuals.
Bob
Now for a brand-new face, Bob! Lewis Pullman plays Bob, who the trailers are making him more of a mystery. How I can put it is that Bob is another government attempt, but trying to make the ultimate Super Soldier. That’s exactly who he becomes, Bob, becomes the Sentry. Thanks to test screenings, and other reports, we learn that he dawns the comic accurate yellow and blue suit. I am with lots of people when they say that the team is put together to face off against Sentry. Almost like a suicide mission??
Now I couldn’t help but notice the early, distorted, “Do you want to die?” from the Toadies. I think that is meant to sort of mimic, The Void. The Void is a dark and destructive entity that has managed to attach himself to Bob. For now, the only way I could really word it is that it’s a dark, more powerful entity, that is able to more take over Sentry. That would be the side we see the Thunderbolts* face.
